Review for Essay #1: To be done for EACH essay you read; your answers will be in the form of a letter. Remember, you are giving feedback as a der, not as an editor or teacher. Do not mention grammar, spelling or punctuation, unless these mistakes make it hard to understand the essay.
You will need to read the essay two times.
Directions:
1. Read the essay all the way through
A. As you read, underline anything that you like and put a wavy line under anything that you have trouble understanding.
B. Then, write down your initial ideas about the essay; 'When I read your essay the first time, I ..."
2. Read the essay again; answer the following questions in your peer review letter:
A. Write down the topic of the essay
B. Write down what you think the writer is saying about his/her topic
C. Look at the title - is it interesting? Does it make you interested in the essay? What suggestions would you make about the title, if any?
D. Look at the introduction - does the first sentence grab your attention? Does it make you want to read more?
E. Does the introduction give you some ideas about the topic? Is it too short? Too long?
F. Is there a thesis sentence at the end of the introduction?
G. Does the thesis statement dearly tell you the topic of the paper? Does it tell you the writer's point of view about the topic? Is it a claim, instead of a statement of fact?
H. Does the thesis statement include the names of the text(s) that will be discussed in the essay?
I. How many arguments does the writer use to support his or her thesis?
J. Are the arguments dear? Do they give enough information?
