Question: To help us frame our discussion of contemporary media literacies, you will write short a memoir (2-3 pages at most) that engages your thoughts and experiences about traditional literacy and how you have come to understand literacy in the last decade. In this memoir, consider your reading/writing/speaking experiences, both in and out of institutional educational, professional, and personal settings. What sorts of literacy moments and identities have you taken up or rejected along your journey?

Ideas to help you think about your literacy(ies) memoir:

Family experiences. Perhaps family members read to you as a child or you saw others reading/writing/interpreting sounds or images-or, like Rodriquez, perhaps becoming more literate distanced you from family/friends.
Think about the times when you realized what you did or didn't know about making meaning with (or interpreting) symbols (what we see, hear, watch, and say).
What were some of the defining moments of your experiences of becoming literate in traditional and more modern literacies?
What discourse communities do you see yourself as literate in and in what ways? How did you become literate in the interpretation of symbolic systems within those communities?
Insights and misconceptions about reading and writing or other literacies.
Friends or classmates who were better at traditional and contemporary literacies than you were.
Strategies for reading, writing, and interpreting images and sounds, both successful and unsuccessful.
