Question: write a reply to While Mary Wollstonecraft's emphasis on the lack of education allowed to women and Catherine Wilson points on economic and workforce disparities are undeniably crucial aspects of feminist ethics, it is important to include, I think Charles Taylor highlights an especially critical aspect of how lack of recognition affects morality. If, as Taylor states, it is true that women's identity is shaped by the expectations and lack of recognition instituted by a society, their terms of morality are bound to be somewhat different. The idea of consequentialism especially highlights this. There have been numerous studies detailing aspects of what has been dubbed "pretty privilege", wherein a woman's perceived beauty affects how others view her morality, honesty, work ethic, intelligence, and her vanity. Most often, living up to the standards imposed by that society has a positive outcome on one's place in that society, even if those standards are unjust and unrealistic. Thus, consequentialism would indicate that focusing on these standards of beauty and subservient behavior is a moral good, and yet, contradictorily, the effect these standards have on self-esteem and the resultant self-depreciation aid in the continued oppression of women, which is certainly a negative consequence.
