Assignment:
Step 1: Read the poem at least twice. Notice the effect that the poem has on you. Ask yourself: How is the poem supposed to make me feel? What mood or tone does it convey? What new idea does it invite me to consider?
Step 2: In just a few words, describe the poem's overall effect. For this step, describe the poem's actual effect rather than the effect the poet was going for. (These two things might be the same, or might not.) This description will eventually be posted as a thread response in the discussion, but you can enter this at the bottom of the poem, as well.
Step 3: Underline sections of the poem that seem particularly effective, vivid, or powerful. The goal of this step is to show the poem's writer what is working well already. Be sure to write notes that will help you tell the poet why or how these parts of the poem work well.
Step 4: Use parentheses and a question mark to note parts of the poem that confuse you. You may be confused because the meaning or significance of a line is unclear. Or you may not understand why a particular detail or line appears in the poem at all. Both types of confusion represent very important information for the poet to have as he or she revises the poem.
Step 5: Make notes at the bottom of the poem, suggesting changes that might improve the poem.
You can refer to other notes you've made on the poem as you complete this step. You can also suggest that the writer expand a section of the poem to develop an image or idea more thoroughly. You can even suggest changing the order of lines or sections.
In this lesson, you learned how to apply your peer review skills in the context of a poetry "workshop." To participate in a virtual poetry workshop, select a poem of your own creation to share with your classmates (your peers) so that they can provide feedback. You will also peer-review or "workshop" another student's poem.
Step 1: To a new discussion thread, upload the poem you selected to share with your peers. Title the thread with the name of your poem followed by your name (ie, The Rose by Grace Jones)
Step 2: Once you upload your poem, it is time to find a classmate's poem to review. (If you do not see one, it means you are the first to submit a poem for review - you'll have to come back later when your peers have caught up to you!) Once you have chosen another student's poem to review, complete each step of the Poetry Writing Workshop worksheet.
Step 3: After completing the steps from the Poetry Writing Workshop worksheet, respond to the classmate's discussion thread of a poem you reviewed. In your response, include an attachment of the original poem, marked up with your comments, as outlined in the workshop worksheet. Your comments in the discussion should include a description of the overall effect plus the attachment. (If you do not know how to mark up the poem electronically, you can use a pen and then scan or take a photo to upload.)
