Question: I'm interested in the intersection between eating disorders and social constructs of gender ideals. I'm going to research the history of eating disorders treatment with a particular focus on how treatment changed over the course of the last century. To tie in our texts, I'll use information from Ellen Bassuk's article on the rest cure, as well as drawing from Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper" and Carmen Maria Machado's "Eight Bites." I think my research question is going to be something like the following: How have shifting ideals of femininity correlated with the development of eating disorders as a recognized and treated form of mental illness in American culture?
