Final Thought If you are involved in a project as a PM or a team member, it is always important to know why the project was selected by the organization and what are the objectives of the organization. If the project is not on track to meet its goals and objectives, it is highly likely that it would be terminated. If the project is on track, it will be terminated when it accomplishes its objectives. In either case, you need to plan for your own next move.

Not all projects are successfully terminated. Sometimes a project is terminated because there is no hope that it would achieve its objectives within any reasonable time or cost estimate. Alternatively, a project that is not doing well may be re-organized and absorbed into another project. Some of the staff may be terminated, returned to their functional divisions, or re-assigned to other projects or departments. A project may also be terminated due to re-appropriation of its budget to a more critical project. Finally, for projects that are championed by someone, the project may be terminated because the champion has moved out of the host organization.

Project evaluation can be performed at the start, during, and after the completion of the project. Evaluation should be done by an independent evaluator to reduce any undue influence from the management or the PM. The target audience for the evaluation report is the senior management, the PM, and team members. Under no circumstances should an outside customer be involved in the evaluation process or receive the evaluation report
