Problem statement:

Understanding the significance of an individual's identity strength is crucial in comprehending the impact of group behavior on identity effects. Charness and Chen (2020) emphasize that the strength of an individual's identity can significantly influence their perception and behavior within groups, thereby affecting identity clarity and group cohesion. Additionally, there is a pressing need to address the identity management challenges specific to blue-collar workers, such as firefighters. Bordia et al. (2020) highlight the necessity of generalizing research to include blue-collar workers' unique identity struggles. This study aims to explore the interplay between group dynamics and individual identity strength while examining the specific identity management challenges faced by firefighters to provide a comprehensive understanding of identity issues in blue-collar professions.

What is Known:

1. As firefighters transition from public servants to firefighters, some will struggle with negative implications for their well-being generated by losing their social identity as firefighters (Miron et al., 2021).
2. Social group membership plays an important role in supporting a retired firefighter's health and well-being. It also enables an individual to gain and maintain new memberships post-retirement (Hasalam et al., 2023).

What is unknown:

1. How behavior in groups can lead to clarity concerning identity effects can focus on the importance of the strength of an individual's identity (Charness & Chen, 2020).
2. Firefighters are considered blue-collar workers. Research must be generalized to examine blue-collar workers' identity management challenges (Bordia et al., 2020).

Research Questions

1. How does a retired firefighter's transition from active duty to retirement impact their identity?
2. How do retired firefighters develop resilience and coping mechanisms for identity loss or transformation after retirement?
