Case Study: The book- The Family: Diversity, Inequality, and Social Change (Third Edition)by Philip N. Cohen
Directions: After reading Chapter 3 of your textbook, use the following table and questions for your Worksheet Assignment.
Step 1. Consider the attitude that you yourself, your parents, and your grandparents might take (or have taken) toward the relationships listed in the top row between you and a member of a specific racial-ethnic group, or just a different group.
Write the name of the group or just "a different group" in the blank above the table.
Step 2. Write down comments reflecting the attitudes of each family member for each situation, or just mark an X in each spot where disapproval is likely or has occurred.

Questions: After completing the table above, address the following questions in your reaction paper:
- Does the level of disapproval you anticipate (or have experienced) depend on which group is considered?
- How did the views of your family members differ across the generations?
- If those views did differ, do you believe those differences are simply a reflection of generational attitudes or a reflection of some other factor?
- Try to explain the pattern you find. How might different theoretical traditions explain the concept of social distance?
- Consider your findings from a functional, a conflict-theorist, and a feminist perspective.
- Consider how your answers might differ if the relationship is with a person of a higher socioeconomic status versus a lower socioeconomic status. Does that change your responses?
