Film: The Last Emperor (1987)
Question: First you will analyze two scenes from your chosen film for all the cinematographic and editorial techniques used, as well as give attention to mise en scene, actor's performance and uses of sound. You will examine these in terms of how they serve the narrative and reveal characters and relationships as well as the film's theme. Your task here is to bring all that you've learned throughout the term to bear on one of these great films.
Question: Second, you will put the film in context. How is it a product of its environment. This might take some research and, if it does, cite your source(s) correctly both in text and at the end of your journal. You can speak to how the film was maybe innovative in its day, what other films it influenced in its genre, and how culture and society have changed since its making. A few of these are somewhat contemporary, so you might also analyze their current relevance. Moreover, consider, as always, that all filmmakers have blind spots, and many of these older films certainly do, especially concerning race, gender, sexuality, etc. If so, please address and comment/reflect.
