Assessment- Reflective Essay

Word Limit: 2500 - 3500 words.

Objectives

This assessment is designed as a reflective essay for students who have achieved above 45% but less than 50% mark in the course but have satisfied the criteria in the University's Grades and Results Proceduresto be eligible for a Supplementary Assessment. You will need to follow the Reflective Writing and Essay Writing processes covered in Ch. 6 of Your Business Degree (prescribedtextbook for COIT20233) as the primary approach, and also the AREA process described in chapters 2 and 3 to analyse the assessment task, research relevant information, evaluate the information you find, and to write an essayto present your findings. This task will assess your skills in reflective thinking, researching information, forming an opinion, academic writing, logical ordering of ideas, and your ability to support your arguments using literature. These objectives will be measured by the ‘closeness of fit' to meeting the assessment task, assessment requirements and assessment criteria listed below.

Assessment task

Students are required to write a reflective essay on the course and the learning experience as per the format outlined from pages 96 to 101 in chapter 6 of the textbook. You should also see pages 103 to 105 which cover the reflective writing format. The essay must include relevant sources to support the arguments and must follow Harvard citation and referencing guidelines. Please note that the prescribed textbook uses APA referencing guidelines. See also the Referencing Style subsection below.

In completing this task, students should address the following key issues:

• An overview of the topics covered in the course (refer to the weekly schedule and guides on Moodle course web site). This should be a written overview, not just a listing of the topics.

• A comparison of COIT20233 against three other courses you have taken in your degree program. This should be a written comparison, not just bullet points.

• Reflect on what you have learned from the course. Cover both positive and negative aspects including the improvement areas. Especially focus on the aspects that resulted in your having to submit the Supplementary Assessment and how you will use this knowledge in future for a better outcome.

• How the course has generally contributed to your professional knowledge and behavior including your appreciation of legal, ethical and social aspects that could be important in your future profession/s.

Note: As this is a reflective essay, using the first person approach is recommended. However, there is a difference between the reflective writing format and informal language which should not be used in academic assessments unless specifically required. See reflective writing in Ch. 6 of the textbook for examples in reflective writing.

Specifically your essay should include the following:

1. Title page:student name, student number, email address, course code, assignment number/category, assignment due date, campus lecturer/tutor, and course coordinator(not included in the word count).

2. Introduction:provide a brief description of the context and the purpose of the essay, the key issues to be exploredand how you will investigate them. Provide the scope, research methodology and the organisation of the essay. (Length: approximately 10% of the total length).

3. Body of the essay: Explore allkey issues as given in the Assessment Tasks section above. In your reflections, follow the key points to observe in the reflective writing process (p. 104 in textbook). Essays do not have headings, tables/diagrams, or bulleted/numbered lists. Form a logical response using paragraph format and cite supporting sources where relevant. (Length: approximately 80%of the total length).

4. Conclusion:Restate the purpose of the essay, and key issues explored and their findings. Explain the significance of the key findings. State if your essay has achieved its objectives (Length: approximately 10% of the total length).

5. Reference list (not includedin the word count).

Note: Essays and Reports have different structural elements. Refer to essay writing guidelines in ch. 6 of textbook and Week 7 course material on the course web site for relevant structural elements.
