Non-profit hospitals are categorized as charities because they donate their profits back into the hospital itself. Instead of paying taxes, they invest this money in the local community. For-profit hospitals pay state and federal income and property taxes. These types are owned by investors and raise money based upon shareholders. (Johnson and Walston, 2020)

Non-profit hospitals are a better choice because they make sure the patients come first. This is because they are not focused on how to spend the shareholders' money, but more focused on the quality of care the patients receive. Non-profits help patients have access to care by lowering patient costs. They are able to do this by investing their money into community care plans and allowing for patients to have lower costs of care. They also are required to treat all patients regardless of if they can pay for care or not, unlike for-profit hospitals who may release the patient if they cannot pay. This provides safe practices not only for the care team, but also for the patients. Another safety procedure the non-profits hospitals engage in is teaching and training exercises. This allows for new and experienced perspectives on patient conditions and exposure to different types. The quality of care is also better at these hospitals due to community feedback. If the community notices a problem or has an idea that may benefit the community, these hospitals are more willing to change accordingly. They also don't have to go through a leadership board outside of the hospital, which allows for speedy changes especially during times of crisis. (Mueller, 2021) These different procedures ensure that the patients' quality of care, safety, and accessibility are the most important to the hospital.
