Question 1:
Chicago is often called the "City of Neighborhoods." Using 2-3 specific examples, describe how neighborhoods form, how they develop their unique characteristics, and how changes in the city over time are felt at the neighborhood level. Note the film, Chicago by 'L' is a required source. Note: The film follows these routes to the end of the line. Oak Park, Evanston, Skokie, etc are not Chicago neighborhoods, but suburbs. Therefore they are not appropriate for this assignment.
Question 2:
Choose three aspects of Richard J. Daley's tenure as mayor and evaluate his legacy. Did Daley move the city forward into positive directions, or did he fail to improve the city for its residents? [Please note that Pacyga, Chapter 10 324-358 will be helpful along with Daley: The Last Boss (which is required) to answer this question].
Question 3:
In some ways Chicago might be seen as a national or even international city during the nineteenth century, but more recent decades have seen it emerge as a true global city. Compare and contrast what happened during the late nineteenth, twentieth, and early twenty-first centuries to explain how and why Chicago became a national, international, and a global city. Compare and contrast the role of transportation, political leadership, civic leadership, image, population movements, and economic forces during each of the periods.
