Question

Global Issue HIV/AIDS

Regarding global issue HIV/AIDS.

The purpose of this assignment is for students to demonstrate awareness of the interrelated socio-cultural, historical, political, and economic forces that shape the social construction of the "Other" (individuals/groups who are seen as 'different' from what society would consider normative). This assignment requires the analysis of how social 'norms' function to maintain inequality on a day-to-day basis in communities, institutions, organizations, businesses, and policies. This activity is also designed to promote a sense of shared responsibility for solving local, global, and intercultural experiences of inequalities across a range of social dimensions (including- but not limited to- race, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or disability status).

Identify and examine a specific, socially conferred advantage to individuals/social groups that is assumed/taken-for-granted in their own culture (considered the 'norm'). The group will examine the socially conferred advantage within a variety of local contexts each group member encounters daily (community/organizations/grocery stores and businesses/schools, churches, etc.). Each member will document field observations, conversations with individuals, and search the literature to support or refute the field notes and conclusions.

1. Identify and explain/define (in detail) the socially conferred benefit of interest.

2. Explore what social group(s) benefit from this 'norm' and how (be specific).

3. Explore what social group(s) are disadvantaged by this 'norm' and how (be specific);

4. Use current literature (within 5 years) to confirm or refute what you and your group members observed/experienced.

5. Suggest concrete ways of individually mediating or solving any inequalities identified.

6. Suggest leadership strategies that could be used to mediate or redress the inequalities identified as outcomes of this socially conferred benefit (be specific).
