Description
Widget XYZ (WXYZ) is a start-up software development company with 10 employees, producing project management software in the owner's garage. Their product has been so successful that they are unable to keep up with the orders. Owner, Ridge Widge has just received a contract that would secure annual sales triple of what they are currently selling.
The current employees wear a lot of hats. Ridge, the owner, is the idea person, and human resources; Steve, the production manager manages four software developer workers who created, update, and maintain the software product. However, he is also responsible for equipment maintenance, training, quality, and safety. There is a finance manager, sales representative, customer service person, and purchaser.
Ridge recognizes there are many challenges to expanding his business, one of them being the need for more formal human resource management practices to adapt to the changing environment. The expansion will involve opening a new facility, the purchase of more production equipment, and hiring upwards of 80-100 employees.
As a Human Resource Consultant hired by WXYZ, your goal is to first prepare a summary, for Ridge and Steve, outlining the human resource recommendations along with a timeline for implementation. You have 4 months to have 80+ fully trained employees.
Instructions
- Students will need to assess the current macroenvironment to develop appropriate recommendations that are well supported by data.
- Students will need to base their project on the current economical, legal, technological environment.
- All assumptions and recommendations must be fully supported by HR best practices detailed in the text or from a viable source (example: shrm.org, osha.gov, etc.). Exhibits will include a brief paragraph of the methodology used to arrive at said exhibit. An example would be a Compensation Analysis. How did you arrive at the recommended compensation plan? Where did you gather the information from and how did you use the information? Did you gather from three reliable sources and average the wages?
Break down the project into the key areas (Talent Management, Training, Compensation, and Performance are some of the key areas). Develop recommendations for each key area based on current trends shaping HR Management (for example: workforce demographics, diversity, job market, technology, economic, and performance management).
Then develop the recommendations (actions) needed for each. For example: Talent Management Process is the key area. Recommendations are: Conduct a Job Analysis, Develop Job Descriptions, Recruit, Test, Select, Interview.
