Assignment:

1. For three days, keep track of your nonlistening behaviors. There will be several times each today that you fail to listen to what is said. Collect 10 examples of these situations.

2. For each of your nonlistening situations, do the following:

Describe the situation by stating who was speaking and what you remember about the message sent.
Explain what distraction occurred and what you did instead of listening. Level the distraction appropriately: noise, preoccupation, bias etc.
State the poor habit that occurred because you didn't listen: selective listening, assimilation etc.
What listening position/s did you notice in yourself for each situation? (these are in the shaded box on page 90 in your book)

After completing steps 1 and 2 for each situation, review and summarize what you have learned about your own ineffective listening behavior. Are there any patterns to your nonlistening? Are there patterns to your listening positions? Are there particular topics or people that tend to distract you? What is the general outcome when you fail to listen? What poor habit, if any is primary for you?
