Question

The patient is a 12-year-old female who has asthma. She experienced an asthma attack after running during cross-country practice at school. She was taken to the ER where a breathing treatment was administered. Her breathing continued to worsen and persistent wheeze was heard. The patient was admitted with moderate persistent status asthmaticus. Blood gases and chest x-ray were ordered. The chest x-ray also revealed atelectasis which the physician documented in the chart. The patient history indicates the patient is passively exposed to tobacco on a daily basis at home.
