Academic Paper: Societal Influences of the Advanced Practice Nurse

Purpose: The advanced practice nurse is continually evolving as an integral part of the health care system. This role influences many components of society, and it is important that, as practicing nurse practitioners, we are aware of mechanisms we can use to increase our influence with patients, colleagues and other members of society.

Assignment: Advanced practice nurse (APN) roles bring great added value to health systems. However, their integration into the health workforce and the sustainability of the role dependson contextual factors surrounding their implementation, including societal influences.

Some examples of societal influences on APN's include administration, education, legislation, health reform, publication, and global practice.

For this assignment, think about what societal influences you think impact this role today and will continue to impact it in the near future. As you progress into Advanced Practice, how will you expand this role, change this influence and or develop new societal influences that you wish to impact?

Examples of Societal Influences: administration, education, legislation, health reform, publication, and global practice. You may use two of these examples and present your own vision of the societal influence you hope to be.

Structure of Assignment:

• Written 4 to 5 page paper with a limitation of 5 content pages (title and reference pages do not count toward total.) Paper is to be presented in 12 point Times New Roman font, using APA 6th edition format.

• Content should be researched using articles published within the last 5 years, unless a historical concept is being presented.

• Students should explore professional ways societal influence is presented and synthesize articles illustrating the success or lack of success that has previously occurred. Narrow the content to at least two but no more than three ways the nurse practitioner has influenced the population. (Example: education: We influence through education with patient teaching, precepting, academic teaching, community forums etc.). Present examples of how this is done presently and how you plan on developing and usingyour vision of societal influence as an Advanced Practiceprofessional.

• Conclusion of paper: the conclusion of this paper should present not only the established ways of influence, but some new ideas that you develop in relation to the professional role you expect to play.
