Examined the psychoanalytic theories of Freud. This is a complex theory which relies on many components to understand the development of behavior. Psychoanalysis is a method of treating individuals who have issues by providing them a safe space to examine and work through undeveloped stages of development. While we are not trained to practice psychoanalysis in this course, we have developed a knowledge and awareness of why aberrant behaviors can occur in offenders.

What sorts of lessons can be borrowed from psychoanalytic/psychodynamic theories and used in our daily work with offenders?

Which aspects of these theories should not be used by those untrained in psychoanalysis?
