A time when I actively encouraged a patient to be involved in their own care occurred with a patient recovering from a stroke. After the patient's initial assessment, I noticed that they seemed hesitant to engage in rehabilitation exercises, fearing pain and further injury. I explained the importance of these exercises in their recovery process, emphasizing how active participation could improve mobility and reduce the risk of complications like deep vein thrombosis or muscle atrophy. I also provided information on how gradual and controlled the exercises would be, reinforcing that they had control over their own pace. The patient, after this discussion, became more motivated to participate in daily physical therapy sessions. Their active involvement in their rehabilitation made a significant difference in their recovery, leading to faster improvements in motor skills and a higher level of independence than initially anticipated. They reported feeling more confident in their abilities, which improved their mental health as well. In my healthcare facility, patient-centered care is generally supported.
