Question: You will read the Supreme Court case "Tinker vs. DesMoines," evaluate the two positions presented, and craft an argument stating which position is more credible. Although this essay contains elements of rhetorical analysis as you are looking at another's argument and deciding if it is well done, the fact that you are asked to pick a position and include a counter-claim make this essay an argumentative one. Instructions:

Step 1: Analyzing the Prompt

The first step in writing any essay is determining exactly what the essay prompt is asking you to do. Read the prompt below and take careful notes about the elements you are required to include.
Essay Prompt: "In this activity, you'll be writing an essay evaluating the reasoning of the Supreme Court majority opinion and dissent in the case of Tinker v. Des Moines. On what grounds did each group of justices support their opinions? Which group has the stronger argument"

Step 2: Organizing your essay:

THIS ESSAY IS CONFUSING. Why? Because it's both a rhetorical analysis essay AND an argumentative essay. It is asking you to analyze the rhetoric first, and then take a position on it.
You will do both, but they will be more brief than if you were to do either just a full argumentative or a full rhetorical analysis.
For an essay like this, consider using the following format:
Paragraph 1 - introduction and thesis statement
Paragraph 2 - brief rhetorical analysis of first work
Paragraph 3 - brief rhetorical analysis of second work
Paragraph 4 - your position on which work has the stronger argument
Paragraph 5 - your conclusion
