Assignment:
Evaluate the relationship between management and leadership
Before going into detail characterising the similarities between the two and differences an understanding of each much be established, the two are used interchangeably with many believing the two mean the same thing however this is not the case, leaders can be characterised with having others follow their ideas whilst managers have individuals working for them. The relationship between the two are complementary, leaders will focus on offering support, advice and encouragement with the aim of inspiring those who they work with to grow on a personal and professional level, leaders will try and develop those around them with new skills. Managers on the other-hand will put much more focus on directions and will tell people what to do rather than ask opinions their approach is authoritarian and will show power over their employees, Kotter (1999) suggested that 'all the managers must know that how to lead as well as manage. Because in this era, organizations may face the threat of loss if their managers do not know how to lead as well as manage.' This I agree with as more than ever those high up in organisations are expected to do both in order to get the most out of their employees and productivity.
