Now that we've explored digital culture via social media and news, reflect on the following questions in a PowerPoint slideshow, Google Jamboard, short essay, recorded presentation, podcast, or blog post. Further information concerning length/time can be found below.

Reflection Questions

Consider the following reflection questions. Select one question to address:

1. "The slow journalism movement seeks to protect accuracy and care in journalism...Journalists have two major truth strategies that they employ: objectivity and transparency" (Poepsel, n.d., p. 79). Explore these aspects of journalism further by selecting and article and viewing the information through multiple sources (e.g. Twitter, CNN, Fox News, Newsy, Yahoo News, etc.). Through comparing and contrasting these articles, do you feel the slow journalism movement is working? Not working? Why?
2. In chapter nine and in class we discussed "echo chambers." Keeping in mind the dynamic of popular culture and pop culture (our specific definitions), in what ways have echo chambers impact everyday life in the United States? Provide specific examples.
3. Poepsel (n.d.) argues that digital culture is democratizing with an open door to amateurs and professionals creating, sharing, remixing, and publishing media. Consider popular trends in digital culture these past ten years. From your research, do you agree with Poepsel that digital culture is democratizing? Why or why not? Provide examples as you explain your perspective.
4. Think about the different types of the "self" we discussed in class: self-concept, self-esteem, self-awareness, self-efficacy, and digital self. In what ways do you see individuals expressing the parts of the "self" through social media. As you consider you answer, you can think about this Films on Demand documentary segment (we did not get to watch in class due to the snow day, but the clip is in the content tab) (you can watch the remainder of the documentary in the Films on Demand library database).
5. Select two aspects of the readings and/or lecture that stood out most to you. Imagine a Tardis, DeLorean, time travel watch, etc. has suddenly appeared. You are invited to travel fifteen years in the future. Compare and contrast how the terms you selected will adapt and change. What will you need to do differently? What will you need to know? Why could these changes occur?
6. Conduct an interview with a member of a generation different from yours (for example: an individual ten or more years younger or older than you). Develop five interview questions concerning their digital media, social media, social capital, news, and/or digital news experiences (add the interview question on a separate page or weave them into your discussion). After completing your interview, consider what you learned and discovered in terms of communication and popular culture. Optional: You could record the interview via Zoom and add your concluding notes alongside the recording.
