Question: Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) has recently installed a reheater for use in a plant in Prince Georges County, MD. The reheater will receive steam at 850 psia and 700?F and release it at 1200?F. Because of losses in the tubing, there is a 12% pressure drop in the steam. The steam flow rate is 2000000 lb/h. Hot flue gases from a burner enter the reheater at 1900?F and 3500000 lb/h to flow over the steam tubes that are arranged in-line. The overall heat transfer coefficient is approximately 8.5 Btu/(h ft2?F). Estimate the effectiveness of the reheater by using the ε-NTU and by conducting a second-law analysis. Specify all assumptions and comment on the results of the calculations.
