Question: Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2019, p. 682) detail a comprehensive list of the "Fifteen Ethical Principles of the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights." This list must be carefully considered and utilized when conducting research involving human subjects. I have chosen to discuss the principle of consent. Consent is a fundamental principle in ethical research, which emphasizes the voluntary and informed agreement of individuals to participate in a study. It involves ensuring that participants have a clear understanding of the purpose, procedures, risks, and benefits of the research and that they choose to participate without any coercion or manipulation or fear of negative outcome by not participating. The principle of consent is of utmost importance in research, as it upholds the rights, autonomy, and dignity of human subjects. To ensure that this principle is maintained the researcher will provide the participant with relevant details about the study's objectives, procedures, potential risks, anticipated benefits, and any alternatives available to them (Manti & Licari, 2018). This information enables individuals to make an informed decision about participation based on their own values, beliefs, and personal circumstances. Additionally, consent acts as a protective measure for participants, safeguarding them from any potential harm or exploitation. It establishes a level of trust between the researcher and the participant, setting the expectation that the participant's well-being and rights will be respected throughout the study. It also allows participants to withdraw their consent at any point during the research if they feel uncomfortable or no longer wish to participate. To ensure that the participant fully understands the study, the informed consent should be written and explained in simple terms that are easy to understand, and not using complicated jargon that might confuse a participant.
