In others, they may possess an important historical significance. However, if the buildings were constructed before the age of electricity, renovators must make certain modifications to keep them functional. Renovators must decide:

Sometimes, the changes can be made with a modest amount of effort. Cables can be run in unobtrusive places or concealed by skirting boards. To modernise these buildings effectively requires creativity and a sound strategy.
