Question

Since we had to rush to the finish line with our discussion of repeatability and contingency, we will take a few minutes at the beginning of class to sum up what we learned and whether you think evolution take 2 would look the same. Please come prepared to make a list of factors/examples that suggest our evolutionary path might be similar if we did it all over again, as well as factors/examples that suggest the evolutionary trajectory would be different if we did it all over again. Think about why there are so many examples where the same gene, and sometimes the exact same mutation, occur independently even though there are so many genes in a genome and multiple genes work together for any phenotype. Do you see historical contingency as a limiting factor, or an opportunity for further diversification?
