Roberto is a 68-year-old male who was injured in the Vietnam war. Both his legs were injured in such a way that he no longer is able to use them and is in a wheelchair for mobility since that time. He takes medications to prevent HIV from advancing into AIDS and lives alone in a small house in an economically disadvantaged part of town. He has no family to speak of and has no contact with those who remain. Roberto has lived in the neighborhood for many years and knows most of the people there. He has transportation problems but occasionally some of his friend s help him get to the store where his pension is scarcely enough to cover the cost of his food after paying rent and utilities. Roberto calls the Medicaid bus when he needs a ride to his PCP's office. He is on a fixed income from his social security pension but always finds a way to afford drinks at a local tavern down the street. Sometimes he drinks too much and goes to jail for public intoxication. He goes to church on most Sundays and has a firm faith. Roberto seldom has visitors except for the caregivers who help him with housekeeping and meal preparation. He is alone most of the time with trips to the bar as his only social outlet. Roberto does not think he should "force myself on others" and so does not seek outside social activities. Roberta does not attend activities at the local VFW hall or participate in other veteran-oriented activities even though other veterans occasionally invite him to do so. He has been in the hospital several times after drinking too much and one of the social workers made efforts to place. That did not work out and he continues living alone and drinking too much when he has enough money. She once tried to talk him into going into a treatment center to help him recover from alcohol abuse but none are able to accommodate his disabilities and detox requirements.
