In the 1972 publication Limits to Growth, some of the conclusions were that exponential human growth (in terms of population and/or resource use) may overshoot the sustainable capacity of the planet. In addition, exponential growth can take a while to slow down, and it may be 'too late' to try and slow down after this capacity is exceeded.
