Discussion Option 1: Sick and Afraid: When Our Symptoms
Keep Us from Seeking Help
We encounter with Solomon, Dickinson., and kaur, depression can be a double-edged sword in that it causes terrible symptoms the very nature of which makes it difficult for the sufferer to find the energy and motivation to seek help. As Solomon states, "the opposite of depression is not happiness but vitality." In addition, depression brings shame. People who suffer from it and other mental illnesses have the added burden of worrying that if they do seek help, others may judge them, for those who have never experienced depression may wonder why people can't just, say, add exercise to their regimens to feel better. In this discussion, you will have a chance to test your own judgments or to explore your own experience with depression, should you have either.
This activity aligns with module outcomes 1 and 3.
