- For this in class essay, you will have the entire period to write the answer to one of the following questions. These questions reflect three of the different aspects that we covered throughout the unit as a whole. All essay questions will be worth 50 points, which means you are required to write the entire period and use as much detail as possible. The more you explain and go into detail on the topic, the better chance you have of earning a higher grade.
- You CAN bring in an outline complete with thesis statement and examples to use for the class write. You CAN bring any and all notes we have covered at this point. You CANNOT have an already written essay (this will be taken away and you will be left with no resources to use to help).
Choose ONE of the following:
Question 1- Compare and contrast the two poems we discussed from Whitman and Dickinson (yes, one needs to be Whitman/ one needs to be Dickinson). You should use examples from the poem, specific word choices, and common themes. Use the poems we annotated to help with specifics. What do both poems say as a whole and how does this reflect both authors?
Question 2- Reflect on and analyze one of Transcendentalist essays we discussed in class (Emerson Self Reliance/Thoreau Civil Disobedience). What is the author projecting in the essay (what is the main point), how are these points reflective of the Transcendentalist movement, and analyze what their purpose could be for our generation vs theirs.
Question 3- Create a short gothic romantic story using the elements we discussed in class. Make sure your story is brief (as we only have one period), has a main conflict, and reflects the major elements we have discussed throughout the unit. The story MUST make sense. As with all the stories we have read, do not include a lot of dialogue.
