Assignment Brief:

You have taken over a failing 3-star Hotel with 75 rooms in London. There seems to be no clear infrastructure or staffing levels in place and the manager has been asked to leave due to poor performance and lack of effective management. The new owner has asked you to report on the key roles required and the main planning aspects to improve the hotel and make it a success. To do this you also have to compare it to a known 5-star Hotel and an established Bed-&-Breakfast. You are required to compare the variety of different accommodation establishments and the different services they offer. You must address all the key aspects outlined in the key tasks below.

Key Task:

1.1 discuss accommodation and front office services for different organisations

- Identify a range of different businesses that provide accommodation. Then discuss and compare 3 chosen businesses and highlight how the services differ in each.

1.2 analyse the roles and responsibilities of a range of accommodation and reception services staff

- Discuss the various roles and responsibilities in each organisation, explaining the reason for the key differences considering guest expectations etc.

1.3 evaluate services provided by the rooms division in a range of hospitality businesses

- Make judgements about how effective various services in the above mentioned organisations are, or how this could be different. Justify all discussions using secondary research evidence to support your discussions.

1.4 discuss legal and statutory requirements that apply to rooms division operations

- Investigate and explain the key legal requirements that accommodation providers must adhere to, in order to maintain a safe environment for both guests and staff.

2.1 assess the importance of the front of house area to effective management

- Investigate the key role of the front of house area or department and explain why this part of an accommodation establish is so important. Use examples of this an accommodation provider.

2.2 discuss the key aspects of planning and management of the front of house area for a given hospitality operation

- Investigate and discuss the main focus areas in the ‘front of house' that your chosen business need to manage and plan for.

2.3 critically discuss the key operational issues affecting the effective management and business performance of the front office area for a given operation

- Whilst discussing this identify the possible issues that may arise within a business if it is not managed or was not planned for.

- Consistently relate the topics to your chosen business

3.1 assess the importance of property interiors and design to effective management

- Explore the importance of design and aesthetics in an accommodation provider and the influence this has on guest perceptions.

3.2 discuss the critical aspects of planning and management of the accommodation service function for a given hospitality operation

- Consider and explain the key features and areas that need to planned and managed to create effective services within accommodation

3.3 analyse the key operational issues affecting the effective management and business performance of the accommodation service function for a given operation

- Also identify the key issues that may impact on the performance of service delivery within your business
