Question

The NP is evaluating a patient with a new diagnosis of secondary syphilis. When discussing partner notification, the NP is aware that Persons who have had sexual contact with a person who receives a diagnosis of primary, secondary, or early latent syphilis should not receive empiric treatment unless they have an RPR > 1:16 Persons who have had sexual contact with a person who receives a diagnosis of primary, secondary, or early latent syphilis <90 days before the diagnosis should be treated presumptively for early syphilis, even if serologic test results are negative. Persons who have had sexual contact with a person who receives a diagnosis of primary, secondary, or early latent syphilis within the last 4 months before the diagnosis should be treated presumptively for early syphilis, even if serologic test results are negative. Persons who have had sexual contact with a person who receives a diagnosis of primary, secondary, or early latent syphilis should also receive empiric treatment for chlamydia and gonorrhea.
