A man has been diagnosed with a mental disease. He is heavily medicated, but the medication severely alters his mood and creates great discomfort. He is unable to work, meaning he cannot afford his rent. He has no immediate family that can support him. He, wanting to maintain some sort of dignity of life, plans to seek for Medical Assistance in Dying. Currently, however, law in Canada does not support MAiD for such a disease/reason. Proponents have called for an increase in the supports for MAiD. Opponents argue an increase in the diseases supported by MAiD is a violation of human dignity. From a legal perspective, should the program expand to offer MAiD to mental disease?
