Performing Arts in Early Childhood
Assessment: Invigilated and Staged Performance
Assessment Objective
Assessment wants to see if future teachers can:
Create an engaging, child-focused performance combining music and drama.
Explain why they made specific artistic choices.
Critically evaluate how well their performance would capture children's attention and imagination.
Work collaboratively in an artistic process.
Students may also benefit from understanding training and development approaches when reflecting on collaborative rehearsal and performance improvement.
Assessment Title/Type
Stage one: supervised rehearsal +draft
Stage two: group performance (2-3 students) +final essay
Word Count (if Applicable)
Draft: 500 words
Final essay:1500 words
Instructions to Students
Stage One: Draft & Supervised Rehearsal (500 words total)
What to Submit (500 words total):
Submit a draft containing three sections that will become your final Stage Two written work:
Section 1: Performance Plan
Brief description of your planned performance and why
Section 2: Artistic Elements Plan
For each of the two performing arts:
2-3 specific artistic elements of music and drama you plan to use
The intended purpose for young children
Example: "We will use contrasting volumes in our music to create suspense and highlight emotional moments."
Developing a strong rehearsal strategy can support performance management and help groups refine artistic choices before the final presentation.
Section 3: Initial Reflection
What you hope to achieve with children through this performance
Any concerns or questions you have about engaging young audiences
Plus: Supervised Rehearsal
Attend one scheduled rehearsal session
Your lecturer will observe and provide feedback on both:
Your performance in progress
Your written draft ideas
This feedback will help you improve for Stage Two
Stage Two: Performance & Final Written Work (1500 words)
Part A: The Performance
Perform live in class:
5-7-minute creative interpretation
Must integrate music and drama
Based on your Stage One plan (but can be refined)
Part B: Revised Written Work (1500 words)
This is an EXPANDED and REVISED version of your Stage One draft:
Section 1: Performance Rationale & Description
Start with your Stage One draft content
Add: How your plan actually worked in performance
Add: Any changes made based on rehearsal feedback
Include: Brief description of your actual performance
Section 2: Artistic Elements Analysis
Expand your Stage One plan with actual examples from your performance
Analyze at least 2-3 specific elements in music and drama
For each element, explain:
What you did (with specific performance examples)
Why you chose it (educational purpose)
How it helped engage young audiences
Section 3: Self-Critique & Reflection including personal contribution to the group
Expand your Stage One reflection
Include:
What worked well in your actual performance
What you would change if performing for real children
How rehearsal feedback improved your work
Your personal growth in using performing arts for teaching and your personal contribution to the group work.
Specific examples of how you engaged (or would engage) children
Reflective evaluation skills are often connected with performance appraisal practices that encourage constructive feedback and personal improvement.
