Assignment:

1. Develop an analysis of Roselily, the protagonist. Do not simply describe what she does in the short story. You must make analytical assertions about Roselily and support your assertions with specific information from the text. Refer to the Analytical Techniques Handout.

2. The setting of "Roselily" is the South. What role does the South play in the action that occurs in the text? To answer this, you must use analytical techniques referenced on the handout pertaining to the setting analysis. Do not simply write that the setting is Mississippi. Address how the location moves the action in the story.

3. Address two themes in the short story. Be mindful to support your assertions with information from the text. Refrain from using elementary assertions. For example, do not write one theme is about marriage because she is getting married. You must discuss what Walker is addressing about marriage? Why is it significant or insignificant? Why is your selected theme important? Review themes addressed on the handout. Any trite responses will not receive credit.

4. Walker uses an array of symbolism and imagery. Explain how she uses symbolism and imagery to inform readers about the characters. Use specific examples from the short story. For example, the veil is a recurring theme in the story. Why is it important? What does it reveal? Be mindful to evaluate her use of metaphors and similes to help represent ideas, emotions, and actions.
