Assignment Question

Your task is to design the shell for a Mars shelter. The Mars shelter is hemispherical with a diameter ranging from 5 -10 m, as shown. The shell needs to be constructed using a double-layered structure. The total thickness of the shell must be smaller than 300 mm.

The shell needs to be able to subject the following loads without any significant failure (i.e. fracture, crush, or deformation exceeding 15% of the shell diameter):

  1. Gravity load (the gravity acceleration on Mars is 3.72 m/s2)
  2. The atmospheric pressure of 610 Pa
  3. Dust storm with a maximum speed of 32km/h (equivalent to a 16 MPa pressure on surface)
  4. Impact load from debris with a maximum diameter of 30 mm with a speed of 32 m/s, 45° to the horizon direction. (Assume its mass is 10 kg)

Other requirements: Cheaper, Lighter, Stronger!
Ignore all other considerations (such as thermal, radiation, corrosion, interior structures of the shelter and so on)
