PROJECT - In this Project, you will be creating a set of tools and information that you can use to plan structured debriefings in the workplace.
To start, you will gather a set of information and resources about best practices regarding debriefing.
1. You have been asked by your manager to assist her in preparing a new set of policies and procedures about debriefing and support processes. You will work on this as a team, but to start, she has asked you to research current best practices and to prepare a report to inform the team.
As a background for the need for debriefing processes, your manager has asked you to research and briefly describe the signs, symptoms and impact of:
- Burnout
- Grief and loss
- Violent and threatening behaviour
- Excessive stress.
For each, provide a link to an authoritative source and a brief summary of the potential impact on workers of each, as well as basic signs and symptoms.
2. Next, your manager wants a recommendation for the resources required for best-practice debriefing.
Based on your research, make a bullet point list of recommended resources required for debriefing after a critical incident (approx. 100 words). Make sure to include recommendations for:
- Physical resources (space, equipment etc.
- Time resources (when to schedule, time needed etc.)
- Expertise (training, external experts etc.).
3. All debriefing requires a safe environment so that people can openly discuss their experiences and concerns. Again, based on your research, what actions need to be taken in the workplace to create this safe environment that encourages open discussions?
Write a bullet-point list of recommendations.
4. Next, your manager wants the team to know more about different debriefing techniques, so that they can prioritise funding and/or training.
Research and briefly describe two debriefing techniques and how they support people in distress. Include links to best-practice sources in your descriptions.
