Ms GF, a 52-year-old female, quit smoking last year. She had had a 30-pack year history of smoking. Lately she has noticed that she is short of breath climbing stairs and walking long distances. She has had a non-productive cough for the past two months. Additionally, she has noticed that she needs to sleep on 2 pillows in order to sleep without waking up coughing. Chest X-Ray is positive for a lung mass that is highly suspicious for lung cancer. Please describe the pathophysiological process in the development of lung cancer.
