Question: Define "persona" as the textbook defines it. How does a star consist of three personalities? What is the role of media in creating stardom? Then, to begin to see the various elements of a star's construction and the cultural meaning her image conveys, as you watch Some Like It Hot, note the way you respond to the star Marilyn Monroe- not the character she plays, but the star. Describe your response to Monroe. What, if anything, does her image suggest to you? Is it possible to perceive any difference between the person and the persona while you are immersed in the film? Some Like It Hot is often cited as one of the greatest film comedies of all time and received 6 Academy Award nominations. It is also famous for receiving a "C" for Condemned rating by the Roman Catholic Church's Legion of Decency who called it "morally objectionable" and "promoted homosexuality, lesbians, and transvestism." The final line of the film almost didn't make the final editing cut (even though it got one of the biggest laughs from audiences). In fact, the best comedic moments of the film are when gender lines are blurred.
