Discovering Your Temperament

Case: Personality inventories, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), assess temperament and define how you relate to others, take in information, make decisions, and organize your world. People of certain temperaments tend to be most satisfied in careers suited to those temperaments.

To uncover your temperament, you can see a career counselor or the career planning office at your college or university and take the MBTI to see what light it can shed on the type of career choice that might be right for you. A licensed professional will administer and interpret the MBTI for you. (Slightly less valid but still very helpful is a similar free version of the inventory called the Jung Typology Test, which can be found at humanmetrics.com.) Once you've determined your temperament, read the accompanying descriptions and lists of suggested careers carefully, and go back online to search for careers well suited to your type. Most people are surprised to see that some of the careers identified as suitable to their temperament are the very ones that they have long considered or wished for. Add the careers you find most suitable to your Top Ten List.
