Psychosocial Care for Health Complexity
A critical essay is a task asking you to critically evaluate, analyse, and synthesise literature in order to provide a critical and persuasive defensible argument and position about an issue
The individual Critical Essay assessment is an opportunity to demonstrate how you are an evidence-based practitioner and can achieve standard 1 of the Registered Nurses Standards for Practice (RNSFP) by critically evaluating relevant literature and research findings. It's also an opportunity to demonstrate how your exploration of the literature assists you in providing "comprehensive, safe, quality practice to achieve agreed goals and outcomes that are responsive to the nursing needs of people" (standard 6.1 of the RNSFP, p. 5) by specifically informing your practice.
In Modules 1 and 2, we've discussed post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) and post-intensive care syndrome-family (PICS-F). PICS/PICS-F encompasses varied physical, cognitive, and psychological/emotional/psychosocial impairments that often begin during admission and persist post-discharge. In this assessment, you'll explore the psychosocial elements of PICS/PICS-F and psychosocial interventions used to prevent and treat PICS/PICS-F in more detail. Your essay requires the following content. Please note, these are not headings for your sections. You will need to provide your own headings for your paper's specific themes and content discussed:
An introduction paragraph. In APA 6th and 7th ed. formatting, the introduction paragraph is never labelled or given a heading. ("100-120 words)
c Introduce PICS/PICS-F as the context for the discussion.
Establish the specific psychosocial focus of the paper Conclude with a clear roadmao outlining the key areas the paper will examine.
The introduction should demonstrate focus and direction rather than a broad description (e.g. "This paper first discusses... then examines..." etc.)
This individual assessment
assists you achieve ULOs:
Critically evaluate common psychosocial responses to complex health concerns and physical and psychological disability within different contexts; and
Analyse how sociocultural factors within the family and community influence wellbeing and responses to the criticallyunstable person
Discuss the psychosocial elements of PICS/PICS-F in adults. ("250-300 words)
In this section, students must critically discuss one psychosocial element associated with PICS/PICS-F in adults. Important parameters:
Focus on one psychosocial element only (e.g., anxiety or depression or PTSD or grief or social strain)
Do not discuss physical or cognitive elements of PICS/PICS-F
PICS and PICS-F do not need to be discussed separately if the psychosocial experience overlaps. Most of the psychosocial elements you're likely to discuss in this section cross over both syndromes so you can be discussing both PICS/PICS-F simultaneously while focusing on your chosen psychosocial element.
This section should move beyond description by:
Demonstrating insight into how and why people experience the selected psychosocial response
Exploring impacts on identity, relationships, coping and recovery
Using evidence to support claims rather than listing symptoms
Critical Evaluation of Psychosocial Interventions ("450-500 words)
This section must demonstrate a critical appraisal of the evidence, not merely a summary of interventions. It should be divided into two clear subsections.
"a 21st century clinician who cannot critically read a study is as unprepared as one who cannot take a blood pressure or examine the cardiovascular system"
(Glasziou et al., 2008, para. 2)
Please ensure that the psychosocial interventions you choose to discuss could involve nurses - do not choose interventions where the entirety of the intervention could only be delivered by other health professionals and fall outside of a nursing scope of practice. Transdisciplinary psychosocial interventions that include nurses as part of a larger intervention team are fine to use here, as are nursing-led interventions and interventions traditionally led by other health professionals but could potentially fall within a nursing scope of practice.
Preventative-Focused Psychosocial Intervention
Critically evaluate one preventative psychosocial intervention aimed at reducing the development of the chosen psychosocial element during ICU admission.
Preventative interventions may include (but are not limited to):
Family engagement strategies
Psychological support or reassurance strategies
ICU diaries
Communication-focused nursing practices
Students must:
Critically appraise the quality and strength of evidence (This involves determining the trustworthiness of the research and whether it is a good source of evidence on which to base our clinical decisions)
Discuss inconsistencies or gaps in the literature
Consider feasibility and relevance to nursing practice
