Assignment Four: Motivational Presentation

To do: Create an original motivational presentation.

This assignment has three components:

1.) Brainstorm ideas and create an outline using one of the organizational techniques discussed in the course. Submit the outline prior to developing the speech so your instructor can provide you with feedback. Also include this outline in your final submission.

2.) Analyse your speech using the concepts discussed in the course. Use Assignments #3 and #2 as a guide to writing this component. Be sure to comment on your nonverbal communication, as well as all other elements of good presentations.

3.) Record your five minute presentation as if you are delivering it to an actual audience. Upload it to YouTube via an Unlisted link. (For more information on how to submit an unlisted YouTube link, go to YouTube itself and do a search for "how to upload an unlisted link" - this will give you a few video tutorials).

Please refer to this when writting the star moment:

The STAR Moment

In Nancy Duarte's book Resonate, she discusses the importance of a climactic moment in the presentation: the STAR moment. Give them Something They'll Always Remember.

Five types of STAR moments exist:

I. Memorable Dramatization

A prop? A short skit? Memorable Dramatization takes a fact and translates it into a visual story.

II. Repeatable Sound Bites

Small sound bites are something the radio or television might pick up. They translate a message into a short, catchy phrase.
Earlier, you studied Randy Pauch's "The Last Lecture." In it, he tells the audience "Early on, you have to decide if you're a Tigger or an Eeyore." This is something most people can relate to and will instantly understand. It's also something they'll take away from the lecture and remember (and repeat) for weeks to come.

III. Evocative Visuals

A sharp visual image can help punctuate your presentation with emotion and clarity.

IV. Emotive Storytelling

An anecdote or short story translates your message in a way that people can understand-much more memorable than the average slide.

V. Shocking Statistics

Used well, stunning statistics can add power to your message.

What is your main message? How will you get people to repeat it?
