Healthy People 2020 has four overarching goals:

Attain high quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature death.
Achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups.
Create social and physical environments that promote good health for all.
Promote quality of life, healthy development, and health behaviors across all life stages.

The Healthy People 2020 guidelines are a key resource for the nurse promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors. Healthy People 2020provides a comprehensive set of 10-year, national goals and objectives for improving the health of all Americans. It contains 42 topic areas with more than 1,200 objectives.

A smaller set of Healthy People 2020 objectives, called Leading Health Indicators(LHIs), have been selected to communicate high-priority health issues and actions that can be taken to address them.The Leading Health Indicators (LHIs) are composed of 26 indicators organized under 12 topics.

When referring to Healthy People 2020LHIs, it is standard practice to include the letters and number with the objective. For example, if the objective you referred to was TU-11: Reduce the proportion of nonsmokers exposed to second hand smoke. The "TU" refers to the topic (Tobacco Use) and the "11" refers to the number of the objective (this is the 11th objective on the list for Tobacco Use).
