"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal...," are some of the most famous words written from the Declaration of Independence and are some of the most memorable lines that people can recall. Despite this, we accept these words at face value without taking a second to think about why these words were altered from Thomas Jefferson's original draft. Additionally, we give these words so much praise for their virtue, however; they just fall short of their true meaning. The Declaration should have been a safeguard for African Americans but as we can see from future events and modifications of the draft, the Declaration only had its eyes set on aiding white males.
