Consider a queuing system with a single server. Arriving customers join either a "regular" (low-priority) queue, or join a separate "high-priority" queue. (As an example, think of people boarding an aircraft. The flight attendant takes customers from the economy class queue, unless there is a first-class customer in a separate, high-priority queue.) The customers are served in a first-in-first-out manner, and once service has begun for a customer, the server continues to work with that customer until the service ends. However, the server takes customers from the low-priority queue if and only if the high- priority queue is empty. Assume that the service time distribution for high and low-priority customers is the same.
