Rhetorical Analysis Essay Instructions
- You will conduct a comparative rhetorical analysis of the two sources and then write an essay to an academic audience (i.e., your instructor). In the essay, you will present the findings of your analysis and argue that the popular article either misrepresents or accurately represents the academic research study it cites. Use specific evidence (incorporating quotations, screenshots, and explanation) from both sources to support your argument.
- The goal of your analysis is to determine whether your popular source accurately represents or misrepresents the academic research, keeping in mind the different constraints of the rhetorical situation within which each author is working. So you should focus on how your sources deliver their messages, not on the content of the articles. Keep in mind that your audience is more concerned with your rhetorical analysis than with the content of the articles
- You will write an academic research paper. You will include in-text citations to and quotations from your two sources, following either MLA or APA format, as well as a Works Cited (MLA) or References (APA) section.
