Question: Compare and contrast the narrator of "Cathedral" with the father-in-law in "No More Maybe." What makes these two characters unlikeable? Does anything make them sympathetic? When we say sympathetic in talking about literature, we mean the character is understandable, even if we don't like them. We may feel pity for them, understand why they are the way they are, feel empathy, or have complicated feelings about them, but they aren't entirely off-putting or unlikeable.
