It is safe to say that the political season is heating up in the months preceding the 2016 presidential election. Politics has always been an arena for public speaking and thus, it is crucial for politicians to deliver their speeches by utilizing language's vectoring potential and the compelling literary element of tone and diction. A plethora of politicians who have spoken publicly have been adept at affecting people's values and attitudes.

During the course of the four-day Republican National Convention that was held last week, the representatives endorsing Trump have managed to charge up the tremendous audience by using the power of language to influence thought. The 2016 RNC featured a traditional lineup of politicians, spotlighting many prominent Republican elected officials. The quadrennial gathering also featured speakers who generally do not appear at a convention podium, including Trump's eclectic collection of friends, celebrities, and relatives.

Overall, these prestigious figures delivered notable speeches by using a confident and resolute tone in an endeavor to encourage the nation to understand more about the human side of Donald Trump and how he will serve as an authentic leader to 'Make America Great Again'. For instance, on the third night of the RNC, it was Florida Gov. Rick Scott's turn to speak and to give his seal of approval for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Unlike most of the other speeches presented during the RNC, Scott's sounded as if thought had gone into it. His speech did not contain any phrasing that was formulaic, and his sentiments did not sound stale.

"This election is about the very survival of the American Dream. It's time for all Americans to put down the partisan banners, vote for the survival of the greatest country in the world, and do the right thing for this country: vote for Donald Trump! (...) We need a president who is politically incorrect and will tell it like it is. We need a president who doesn't believe government is the answer to every problem. We need a president who recognizes that great countries have borders. We need a president who will bring American jobs back to America.

We need a president who is not afraid to say 'radical Islamic terrorism'. And we need a president who will wipe ISIS off the face of the earth." (Scott) Scott's ommision of words garnered real, enthusiastic applause as he preaches by using a fervent and laudatory tone. In addition, he uses the rhetorical device of anaphora, as a way to lay and secure emphasis on his sentiments. Politicians tend to frequently use anaphora in their addresses and political speeches to evoke passion among the audience.

The repetitive structures presented in the portion of Scott's speech suggests the importance of having a better leader for America and its citizens. Moreover, it inspires patriotic sentiments among the masses. As I am rooting for Hilary Clinton during this presidential campaign, I am most looking forward to the Democratic National Convention. I will be posting my sentiments and observations after the convention has ended!
