Remington contended that prior to shipment the gun was field tested, but the test did not reveal any defects. An expert witness stated at trial that each time the gun was fired, tiny particles of manganese sulfide escaped into the steel barrel causing it to crack and that the cracks continued to expand, causing the gun to explode.
