My most recent leadership role was as a fill-in Foreman for Amtrak. My responsibilities as a fill-in foreman was to be vacation relief for the fulltime Foreman. Amtrak is a company that is made of unions and was different from other leadership roles I have had. The main difference from other places and the union shop, is that the job duties are assigned based off seniority or the amount of time the employee has been with the company. So, every position had its assigned duties and worker that only worked that position. As a fill-in foreman sometimes after the assigns were where given to everyone, the manager would need something else done. So, I would ask someone that had finished with their assignment to help with the task, and they would refuse and tell to ask the junior guy in the shop. I originally thought this was wrong and spoke with the manager about this and he agreed with employee. So, I went to the junior guy and asked him to help with the task. He complained that he had work to finish but stilled helped with the task. I continued with the role for the next 30 and had similar experiences to this until the fulltime foreman returned. The experience was meaning to me because I learned the value of compromising with other to completea task, and just because I did thing differently in other environments does not always mean that its right for my current environment.
